Sri Lanka Fuel Relief Package: Government Announces Diesel and Petrol Subsidy Amid Middle East Crisis

Sri Lanka Fuel Relief Package

Sri Lanka Fuel Relief Package has been introduced by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to reduce the economic burden caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Speaking in Parliament today (07), the President stated that the government has focused on three key sectors under this relief initiative: fuel, energy, and gas, considering their direct impact on the public and the economy.

As part of the fuel concession, the government has proposed a subsidy of up to Rs. 100 per litre for diesel and Rs. 20 per litre for petrol. These concessions are expected to be implemented with the next fuel price revision scheduled for May.

The President further explained that super diesel and super petrol prices will continue to be determined based on current market rates. Due to insufficient data to revise these categories, the government has decided to maintain them in line with global pricing trends.

Additionally, the government is expected to bear an estimated cost of Rs. 20 billion per month to support this relief program. The proposal has been designed to remain in effect for a period of three months.

This move comes as part of broader efforts to cushion the impact of global instability on Sri Lanka’s energy sector and provide relief to consumers facing rising living costs.
