MK Stalin Resignation Shakes Tamil Nadu Politics After Election Defeat

MK Stalin resignation has marked a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics after the recent legislative assembly elections. The outgoing Chief Minister submitted his resignation to the Governor’s office, bringing his term to an end.

M. K. Stalin stepped down following the election outcome, which significantly altered the state’s political balance. Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who currently holds additional charge as Governor of Tamil Nadu, is expected to take the next steps on the transition.

Soon after resigning, Stalin updated his X profile, removing the “Chief Minister” title and identifying himself only as the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In a public message, he thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for their strong support during the election.

He stated that the DMK-led alliance secured over 1.54 crore votes. He highlighted that the margin between his alliance and the winning side stood at 17.43 lakh votes, which equals a difference of 3.52 percent.

Stalin instructed party candidates to meet voters directly and thank them. He stressed that public service remains the party’s duty whether in power or in opposition.

He also responded to supporters who expressed concern. Stalin said he draws strength from the people and remains confident about the future. He referred to the legacy of M. Karunanidhi and reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s core values.

The election results brought major changes. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the largest party with 108 seats. The DMK secured 59 seats. Indian National Congress won five seats, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam claimed 48 seats. Other parties recorded smaller numbers across the assembly.

This outcome places the DMK in the opposition. The party is expected to adjust its strategy in the coming months while continuing to play a key role in state politics.
