Walk for Peace pilgrimage has officially commenced in Sri Lanka with the arrival of an international delegation of Buddhist monks led by Pannakara Thera.
The group, consisting of seven venerable monks, arrived in the country this morning (April 21) to begin the globally recognized spiritual journey aimed at promoting peace and unity. Adding a symbolic touch to the procession is “Aloka,” a dog accompanying the monks, who also safely reached Sri Lanka.
The pilgrimage, scheduled to take place from April 21 to 28, is being conducted with full state patronage. It has received extensive support from multiple government institutions, including the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Buddhist, Religious and Cultural Affairs, along with several other state bodies, security forces, and private organizations.
A key highlight of the journey is the sacred Bodhi sapling carried by Venerable Pannakara Thera. The sapling originates from the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, one of the most sacred sites in Buddhism, emphasizing the deep spiritual importance of the pilgrimage.
Organizers say the initiative aims not only to promote global peace and harmony but also to showcase Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage. The event is also expected to highlight the country’s traditional arts and crafts to both local and international audiences.
With strong institutional backing and international participation, the Walk for Peace pilgrimage is anticipated to draw significant attention and reinforce Sri Lanka’s cultural and spiritual identity on the global stage.
